It’s no secret that eyeshadow is my favorite makeup product. I love and adore it and even more, I love sharing my tips and tricks for achieving a perfectly blended eye makeup application. If you’re new to eyeshadow it might seem a bit overwhelming. Never fear, I have your back! Today I’m whipping up my recipe for eye makeup success and sharing the ingredients for the perfect introductory eyeshadow kit.
First things first, when in the makeup process do you apply eyeshadow? It’s a matter of personal preference, but you’ll save yourself the heartbreak of cleaning up smudges on your foundation and powder if you put on your eye makeup before anything else.
As with any good recipe, it’s important to assemble the right ingredients for the task at hand. You’ll need the following:
Eyeshadow Brushes (you can find my list of must have eyeshadow brushes here)
A few basic Eyeshadow Colors
A charcoal and a brown Eyeliner Pencil (pictured here are Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Uzi and Whiskey).
A fantastic Mascara
To get started with the eye makeup process, prime your eyelids with a primer. This is the key to making sure your eye makeup lasts for a long time and blends with ease.
I recommend starting off with very basic eyeshadow colors then easing up to bold colors. No matter what your skintone, you can’t go wrong with a medium brown in the outer corner of your eyelid, a shimmery tan on your lid and a matte cream shade on your brow bone. For help figuring out where to put which shadow, check out this eye makeup tutorial from way back in the early days of Painted Ladies. It’s very basic, but it gives you the anatomy of eyeshadow shapes.
Eyeliner can seem a bit intimidating for new makeup users, which is why I recommend starting off with gel eyeliner pencils. They’re very user friendly and easy to blend out as needed. Here’s a tutorial with some beauty hacks for applying eyeliner for newbies.
