Painted Ladies is turning 8 in a couple of months, and there have most definitely been some changes along the way, especially concerning my health transformation. This ties into the new show The Big Fat Truth, airing Sundays at 8pm ET on Z Living Network, which I’ll tell you about after I share a few photos. For the past couple of years, I’ve looked pretty much like this.
It was a very, very difficult time in my personal life. As a single mom of a child with autism who had extreme behaviors, I internalized a lot of my problems and soothed my woes with food. Researchers have said parents of special needs kids have stress similar to combat soldiers. I can tell you this is the truth.
The food cure wasn’t the greatest and there came a point when I began to feel absolutely awful. This isn’t when I was at my worse, but it’s pretty close. You can see from my face that I was bloated, uncomfortable, in pain and very near 300 pounds (how fierce was my eyeshadow, though?).
I hit my lowest point when I had to take a visit to the emergency room for extreme pain in my neck and back. I got a shot of medicine to ease the pain but I knew I had to stop and change my health or else. I couldn’t allow myself to descend any further into a negative health situation.
That was almost 5 years ago, and I still remember how I could barely lift my leg over the recumbent bike when I started going back to the gym. This isn’t my first trip back to the extreme weight loss rodeo, but it sure will be the last! When I was in my 20s I lost a lot of weight I had put on because of a stressful marriage, and it really only took 6 months! This time around in my mid-and late-30s, it’s taken years, and I’m actually glad because the health lessons I’ve learned will last decades to come.
So, I made changes. I leaned on my Christian faith to strengthen me as a mom and understand the root cause of using food as crutch. I adjusted my eating behaviors and slowly but surely change happened. Some of you noticed when I started looking more like this.
It’s because of my personal experiences that I’m really looking forward to The Big Fat Truth, a new show from reality-TV pioneer J.D. Roth that will be on the Z Living Network. This show features participants from all walks of life, including former contestants on The Biggest Loser and our society’s unsung heroes.
The reason I’m most excited about The Big Fat Truth is because it addresses the root cause of weight struggles and gives people tools and optimism that will help them transform their lives.
