It seems like it was a whole other lifetime ago when, as a young and avid makeup lover, I went to my local Long’s Drug store and proudly purchased an eyeshadow brush by Maybelline. That brush was scratchy as all get up! It was also the best, lowest price brush option I could find, and so I happily practiced eyeshadow looks with that little brush for months until I started investing in higher priced makeup brushes.
These days the entire beauty industry has completely changed (in a good way!) and it’s entirely possible to find excellent brushes both in drugstores and online that definitely won’t scratch your eyelids nor break the bank! In this extended edition of the makeup brush series “Which Makeup Brush Where?“, I’m sharing some of the Best Makeup Brushes For Less. These brushes are all $20 and under, with the majority $10 or less.
The materials of these brushes vary – some are made from synthetic hairs, some are natural, and some are a mix of natural and synthetic fibers.
As a former makeup artist and perpetual makeup lover, there are a few criteria I go by when I’m looking for the perfect makeup brush. Most of all, I’m looking for longevity – brushes that will last the long haul and perform well for a number of years to come. Specifically, what I’m looking for are brushes with sturdy handles (I’ve had plenty break on me!), no excess shedding of brush fibers (a huge bummer), and soft fibers that maintain their integrity and don’t deteriorate over time.
Coastal Scents Pro Fluff Brush versus the famous MAC 217 blending brush. Which one is which? FYI, the MAC version of this natural fiber domed blending blending brush is on the left. Years ago I was looking for a lower priced dupe for my favorite MAC brush, and found it in the Coastal Scents Pro Fluff Brush. I use these brushes allllll the time, and the Coastal Scents brush has come through (and then some!).
I found these brush sets at Walmart and received a few via Boxycharm and have to express my extreme love and devotion for these synthetic fiber brushes. They give me hints of Real Techniques brushes, but are unique in an of themselves.
Royal and Langnickel makes brushes for both art work and makeup and they are excellent product that are definitely worth checking out. I’m very impressed with the performance of my Moda Pro brushes and wish they’d been around when I was using that scratchy Maybelline brush so long ago!
What are some of your favorite budget friendly makeup brushes?
