So You Wanna Be a Makeup Artist, Part 2

By Sheila

To kick off the new year and new career goals, we’ve asked some of our contributors, each artistic stars in their own rights, to give our readers some advice on how to become a makeup artist.

You can see part one here.

My suggestion to other artists who want to be a part of the industry is to become familiar with other artists’ work by monitoring magazines and visiting their websites. Knowledge is power, so spend some time becoming more familiar with new products.

Networking is a powerful tool and I would also suggest reaching out to established makup artists.  Personally, I have gotten more jobs from friends than any other way, and it was through networking that I got signed with my agency Cloutier.

Also, doing free work links yourself to paid work. Join Model Mayhem and build your portfolio with Photographers on the site — they are always looking for makeup artists.

And, finally:  Sell. sell, sell yourself you are you best FAN! Make others more knowledgable of your work!

Peace and Blessings to a prosperous New Year in 2010!

I am a hairdresser by trade but have always wanted to branch out into the beauty world. I just don’t seem to be as good with make-up as with hair but your site has given me some good tips, thanks very much!
