Small Lips – Most Say Add Gloss!
I say do the opposite. Question that — does it really make the mouth look more proportioned? When I apply gloss to small lips light instantly hits the bottom lip, yes, but the top lip is left in a shadow. It makes already small lips look smaller. Here are my steps to enhance small lips.
Try it out see what you think; every time I do this to a small mouth they always say, ”you make my lips look so good!”.
Small lipped- girls can’t even get away with just lipstick and goout the door, this is a 3 step thing and it won’t add much time to your day. It’s worth the extra two-steps and really makes you look polished and put together and pouty
What you’ll need:
1. A concealer. I recommend MAC’s Studio Finish. This formula works best for the lip area.
2. A lip liner.
3. Sometimes I’ll add a stain lipstick (LOVE the Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain in Flirty Nude) or a MAC Cream Color Base, but this is not a must.
4. If you use a lipstick or anything with lot’s of shine you’ll also need a translucent blotting powder, I like MAC’s Blot Powder.
Here are the steps to acheiving gorgeous lips:
1. CANVAS: Start with a prepped canvas by evening out the skin around your mouth with a concealer.
2. LINE the lips.
a) Start on the outer corners heavy-handed: get in those corners to make them as dark as possible for the lip liner color you’re using.
b) As you go further in to the lips, get softer and softer till you hit the center lip and use short strokes.
c) Go JUST outside the lips natural line. As you do pat your finger on the line to blur it out a bit, you are creating a more perfect lip in doing so.
d) After I’ve done the outside I always line where the lips touch each other when you close your mouth. This is important – light and dark push and pull that’s what it’s all about.
3. PUFF! After all that is done, pat your finger in your concealer and touch once where the light should hit your lips evenly on the center of the top and bottom and liggggghtly blend in –don’t ruin all the work you just did! If you have some shine goin’ on put a little blot powder on top to finish!
My mom always asks me to do her lips because, “I make them look bigger.” I show her again and again but somehow the lip liner always looks a little to far outside the lip line. Be careful to not look like a clown. I would consider her more makeup savvy then most women, too! This is who I watched my whole life.
So, I hope I explained this easily enough. It’s a real precise thing but a miracle worker!
I’ve made a Flikr set with all the steps in chronological order and some more photos, so check it out here!

Wow those are such great tips! I’d love to line my lips properly, but my upper lips curl in at the corners and the skin is waaay discoloured/uneven there.
By the way, your jawline is absolutely amazing!
concealer! and a lip liner! I’m telling you can fix anything! email me a pic of your lips. [email protected] I’ll tell ya what to do. Thanks! everyone is so complimentary here. hahaha!
Your lips look great. To be honest I didn’t think they looked small to begin with. I guess I’m not sure what lip proportion is. Though I think with women we always want the opposite of what we have until we learn to love it. LOL But you did a great job. I think I’ll try it just on GP. I don’t think my lips are small but I figure it’ll make any bodies lips appear fuller without having to use that lip plump stuff. :O) Thanks for the demo.
yeah that’s what I meant really. It’s for anyone. some need more help then other though. creating shadows and highlights instead one mass of gloss. I do this on every bodies lippies! also a white shimmer shadow right on the top of the lip line looks perfect!
Should of been called lip liner DON’T SKIP IT!
Thank you for the tutorial! It`s all well explained and the pictures are great for understanding. I`ve got small lips so I would try your tips.
