Revisiting L’Oreal Voluminous Original (It’s All About The Base!)

Little known fact: I haven’t always gotten along very well with L’Oreal Voluminous Original. In fact, for many years – at least 20 or more – I’ve considered it a dud in the world of drugstore brand bargain mascaras.
It seems weird to think that the original L’Oreal Voluminous mascara really is over 20 years old, but it’s true – I remember when it came out in the mid-90’s during my high school years and even reading in Allure magazine that the late and great makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin counted it a favorite.
If a mascara has has been loved by so many for so long and is still around after all these years, it’s gotta be a good thing but I’ve always been disappointed by the results. It left my lashes limp and uninteresting and so I eschewed it in favor of the multitude of other L’Oreal Voluminous mascaras that are on the market. Me and L’Oreal Voluminous Feline have something special going on and it’s a permanent favorite. Lately something’s changed, though, and it’s all about the base – the L’Oreal Voluminous Base primer that I’ve been testing out for a few weeks.
Both the mascara and the primer have the same exact bristle wand that’s designed to deliver lots of volume to lashes.
While I find using the original L’Oreal Voluminous alone leaves my lashes looking limp, the base makes all the difference in giving my lashes long lasting length and volume. Let’s take a look at the before and after photos.
With Primer Only
The downfall of the new combination of L’Oreal Voluminous Base paired with the L’Oreal Voluminous Original mascara? Flakes! It’s not the biggest deal because I only notice it at the end of the day when I’m very tired, but I definitely do get flakes from this mascara combination – it doesn’t hold up so well by the end of the day.
My Final Thoughts: Who knew an old mascara had a new way to hold my interest? I’m newly impressed with L’Oreal Voluminous Original mascara plus the primer base and will include the pair in my mascara rotation.
