The Personal MicroDerm is a home microdermabrasion system that helps diminish fine lines, dryness, clogged pores, and any skin imperfection that a basic exfoliant helps with. It is more effective than a scrub, but not quite as strong (or expensive and painful) as a professional microdermabrasion. I was excited to give this a try, as I have some raised acne scars and have always considered a professional treatment. I also tested this on my mom who has sunspots on her hands.
The Microderm included a very helpful DVD, as any at-home treatment can be intimidating. It comes with interchangeable heads (blue sensitive, green regular; and large for body or small size for face), as well as two small samples of M2 skincare, a moisturizer and a 20% Mandic/Malic acid, which are recommended for optimum results.
The sensation feels like a combination of sand buffing and vacuuming your face. The head vibrates very fast as you glide over the skin in rows while white powder sloughs away (which is your skin!) The only way to get a good sloughing is to feel the buffer suction onto your skin, which doesn’t always happen. It’s almost impossible to get a good suction on certain angles of your face, and it was especially difficult to get a good suction on my mom’s hand. However, after some practice, the MicroDerm is very user friendly.
The process is nearly painless, especially with the sensitive head, but it leaves your skin with a raw stinging feeling (the moisturizer helps calm the skin). It was nice to see the skin really coming off and feels more effective than a typical scrub, and afterward my skin felt smoother and more even. The suggestion is to use this once a week, but I think I’ll go over tough spots twice a week.
Verdict: This is a straightforward tool that is excellent for a serious exfoliant. I have seen some good results and will continue to use this weekly, but the scars on my chin might need something stronger. My mom has had really great results on her hand! She is excited to keep using it and watching her sunspots fade. I would definitely suggest this to anyone with some minor hyperpigmentation or dryness, as this is a good investment and much more affordable than spa treatments.
