Whether we do them because we enjoy them, feel like we have to, or a combination of both, we all have certain beauty rituals we engage in on a regular basis. One beauty ritual I hold near and dear is my weekly at-home nail care routine. The feeling of accomplishing a (sometimes relatively) smudge-free manicure? Amazing!
It was just a few years ago that I was a salon manicure and pedicure junkie. I had to be at one of my nail places every two weeks on the dot to get a pedicure or else my nerves would be frazzled! Thinking back at that time, my rigorous requirements – which included wearing the exact same nail polish for YEARS – all seem a bit ridiculous! For the record, I was a strict adherent to onlyOPI Lincoln Park After Dark or Essie Wicked on my toes. I haven’t worn either for almost 5 years, so can see that progress is possible!
About five years ago I made a decision to stop outsourcing my nail care treatments for a few reasons. Namely, I was looking forward to saving some time and money and using both resources in different areas – the time went to working on this blog and the money went to my makeup budget !
While I have to thank my gene pool for giving me hair that’s mostly retained it’s original color for nearly 40 years, it’s also given me particularly tough cuticles! Some nail technicians recommend never trimming or removing your cuticles, but if I didn’t do something to mine things would be scary. I apply the Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover, let it set for 15 seconds, push back my cuticles and soak them for a minute or so in warm water before trimming them with cuticle nippers. The Sally Hansen blue bottle of cuticle remover is excellent and gets the job done well.
My nails also have a tendency to split so I need a good treatment as a base coat. The Sally Hansen 7-in-1 Complete Care Nail Treatment was recommended to me a while back and I won’t be without it. I also use it after I apply my nail color and it keeps my nails going strong for about a week.
What needs to be said about the incredible Lush Lemony Flutter? This cuticle cream is above and beyond anything else I’ve ever tried and keeps the skin around my nails and my nails looking good and avoiding the hangnail tragedies I experienced in years past. It’s $20 for a jar that lasts several months, making it an incredible value for a product that is very well worth the hype. See my original review here.
