I could go on a tangent about Dustin Hunter and how truly awesome he is. Fortunately for you he made this music video entitled “Chicken at M*A*C” so you can better understand my love for this YouTube celebrity.
Ok…I am going to warn you, you will sing this alllllllll day.
Dustin Hunter, a native of the Pacific Northwest, found his way to make through art.
“I don’t remember NOT drawing,” he told me on the craziest Facebook chat to happen between two people who are not on day pass from the home. Inspired by fashion magazines and Michael Jackson’s thriller video, Dustin’s approach to make-up is not about helping you find the ultimate “your lips but better” lipstick. Oh no, this self-proclaimed lipstick junkie is more about Spiders from Mars than Butterfly Kisses.
Dustin explains on his website, “There are enough people who can make you look “pretty,” I want to make you look like a drag queen from Neptune! I specialize in rock and roll/stage makeup.”
After doing very well in a YouTube contest sponsored by Pixiewoo, Dustin decided to launch himself into the world of YouTube. Eventually he made this video — I watched it, and decided he needed to talk to Painted Ladies.
So, here are some excerpts of the conversation:
(Concerning True Blood)
Dustin: Have you noticed how the blood makeup is different? Am I just high? It looks different! It’s SO PRETTY this season! They’re doing all these fine splatters. It’s like… ULTRA DETAILED!
Megan Yeah, Bill looked like he was dusted with baby powder last season
Dustin: I notice when they do Eric… they kind of forget that a vampire isn’t just pale in the face 😉
Megan: If I had to powder that body I’d forget English.
(Concerning Stuff That Actually Interests You!!)
Megan: How can we keep our make-up transfer proof?
Dustin: I use a lot of bases to make things last. Meaning cream blush UNDER powder blush, etc. Eye makeup is often done with cream shadows first, and then I go over them again with powder shadows. Almost like doing an eye look twice.
Also – it’s a little difficult to do (takes practice) but if you can do your eye makeup with eyeliner pencils that will LAST!
MAC pro is launching their acrylic paints this week and I’m REALLY excited to get those! They are supposed to be water proof and bendable.
But yea… layering helps, and you can do it without looking like a drag queen.
I also use REALLY PIGMENTED colors. I’d rather have a ton of pigment than have to build something up. No one wants a bunch of makeup all over his or her face.
Me: How can Jane Q public put a little edge in her look?
Dustin: You know. I’m kind of with you on the glitter thing.
I think it’s all about the glitter.
Me: I agree 🙂
Dustin Take a touch of reflects teal and put it on your lid – even over a neutral brown look. People will compliment you. Trust me.
Me: Any great lip lining tricks?
Dustin :I’ve never had trouble with it. But I’m so used to drawing. I’d say…
Stabilize your hand with your pinky finger (like on your chin) and I think everyone does this… but if you’re applying lip liner on yourself, try moving your lips instead of your hand.
I have more control that way.
It’s easier to just keep my hand in one position and move my lips against the pencil. Usually on my top lip that’s what I do. I think I use a combo of lip/hand movement. Ha-ha!
It’s the same with nails.
People have a hard time painting their right hand (if they’re right handed)
So don’t paint with your left hand. Hold the nailbrush in your left hand but hold it still and move your right hand against the brush. It’s WAY easier that way.
I can’t keep my left hand steady to paint my nails on my right hand.
Me: So you like matte lipsticks with pigments over them?
(He uses a Matte Red with a Reflects Red on top to recreate a Hedwig Look)
Dustin:I like ALL lipstick! Ha-ha
My favorites are mattes with a ton of color but I mix a lot of colors so I also am always looking for sheer lipsticks with an effect to them and less color.I think I bought 4 of those silver lipsticks that came out with the riveting collection by MAC. I also have about 6 Bubbles 🙂
Me: My first MAC lipstick was Jungle Juice
Dustin: But yes. For stage, matte lipstick all the way, then you can set it with pigment if you really want it to stay… or with glitter for a TON of sparkle!
Ooh… what was my first??
I think it was =Ruby Woo… or Russian red.
I still love Ruby Woo. It’s the one I run out of first. Always.
The conversation eventually devolved into discussions about Bret Michaels inherent prettiness, how the girls on the porn box covers do their eyes, and awkward pictures of people and their pets.
He is a very refreshing voice in the make-up world. His humor, irreverence, and enjoyment of make up as personal art is something I look forward to when I log into YouTube. Please check out his channel, even if the Drag Queen from Neptune isn’t your thing! Sometimes a little change in perspective makes for great new ideas.
Oh, and in your honor, Dustin, I wore so much glitter to my friend’s band show I am now known as “ Megan Sparkles.” It was not just a sprinkle here and there, it was like an upper body wall…lol
