Me Time

By Sheila

Although I often mention my two year old son on this blog, it’s not often that I mention the fact that I am a single mother with full custody. It’s an incredible responsibility, often mind-blowing, always adventurous, and also exhausting.

In the middle of the hubbub that comes with living a modern day life, finding alone time is nearly impossible. It’s why I rely on my morning ritual – when I sit cross-legged on the floor of my bedroom, haul out the yellow purse that I’m using as a makeup carrier, and spend 10 minutes or so absorbing myself in powders, liners, products, and the colors of the rainbow.

I don’t listen to music, but let the background sounds of PBS Kids fade in the background, and for once in my day take time to still my thoughts, focusing on the task at hand. It’s a peaceful time, a still time, and a deserved escape.

The end results always make me feel good, but it’s not really about the finished product. The journey is much more important to me – it’s my sacred time and my meditation, and I couldn’t wish for anything better.

Do you consider your makeup appplication time as an opportunity to gather your thoughts for the day? Where do you put on your makeup?

    Doing makeup is me time, only in the weekend. I’m always in a rush during the week to enjoy makeup applications :-)

    Yes, my husband will make me a cup of hot tea and I will put on my makeup while the Today show is blaring in the background. I know not conventional but it works :-)

    It’s totally a meditative act. I think of it like painting on a blank canvas.

  • My “me” time is when I take my shower right before bed. I have a huge collection of bath & body products so it’s always fun figuring out what I’m going to use each evening. I usually apply my makeup in my bathroom right next to my office (I work from home) while I’m working, so it’s not really a peaceful time for me.

  • I fully identify with this – I find my makeup time to be really soothing and I’ve actually gotten lost in it a few times – I’ve looked up and an hour and a half has passed and I’m late for uni!

    @Miss Boom – yep!
    @Lisa – That’s actually a great time … gets you relaxed for bed!
    @SilhouetteSreams – it’s crazy how fast time passes when you’re having fun. :)
