My friends, lets talk about swimwear. Yes, swimwear! One simple word, and yet a myriad of reactions that go into finding the perfect, wearable swimsuit that won’t make you feel entirely self-conscious. Believe me, I know just how challenging the struggle to find the right swimwear can be, and I have to admit I haven’t owned a swimsuit in many years pretty much for that very reason. That’s going to change soon, because I’ve found the most darling swim dresses and swimsuits from Jessica Rey Swimwear.
As Jessica Rey will tell you, she is a swimwear designer who can’t draw, sew or swim. But, she does have the distinction of having a MBA, possessing tons of business savvy, and being the White Power Ranger on Power Rangers: Wild Force. She’s also known for a continually popular talk from the Q Conference where she discussed the evolution of the swimsuit and modesty.
I had the great pleasure to meet up with Jessica recently to talk more about her eponymous line of ethically made swimwear that’s now branched into kids swimwear, clothing and accessories. Jessica is warm, intelligent and her motivation for creating and developing her brand is quite inspiring!
Jessica Rey Swimwear was developed out of necessity. As an actress, Jessica spent lots of time by the pool in her apartment complex. After not feeling comfortable wearing bikinis, Jessica got together with her roommate who just happened to be a student at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising). Together they created cute swimsuits that started getting attention and were sold on a by request basis. It wasn’t much longer until fashion site ModCloth came calling and the debut of Jessica Rey Swimwear sold out in an hour.
Eventually Jessica focused sales of her products on her website, and her product line has since expanded to include the brand Estella, timeless clothing with classic lines inspired by Audrey Hepburn.
As with Jessica Rey Swimwear, the clothes you’ll find in the Estella line are designed to last and made with high quality cotton. The price point is a bit higher that what you’ll find at Walmart or Target, but as you’ll see from the quality, you get more than your moneys worth. Some customers are wearing swimsuits purchased nine years ago!
All of the materials from Jessica’s swimwear and clothing are ethically sourced cotton in Peru and are manufactured in factories where workers are paid fair wages. I have my eye on quite a few pieces from Estella and I’m looking forward to keeping them in my wardrobe for years to come.
