How To: Improve Your Digestion (and Your Appearance)

Guest Post by Aleya from Spontaneous Chick

Having a healthy digestive system is probably not something you typically consider as an important part of your beauty routine, but the fact is, certain foods can help reduce bloating and improve your skin. Dr. Robin Baradarian, a board certified physician specializing in gastroenterology, offers his tips on which foods to eat – and which ones to avoid.

Do Eat:

Yogurt – This superfood has probiotics, which are essentially live bacteria that are believed be beneficial to your digestive tract. It also contains a significant amount of protein and numerous other nutrients such as calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Herbs – Adding fresh herbs to your meals can help you to digest them better without causing bloating or discomfort the way spices might. Some good herbs to try include fresh ginger, peppermint, sage or basil for a pop of flavor without the upset tummy.

Rice – Rice, especially brown rice, is great because it’s high in fiber, easy to digest and creates minimal gas.  It’s an excellent option if you’re having stomach problems, not to mention that a high fiber diet is recommended to maintain healthy skin.

Don’t Eat:

Fried Foods – Anything fried is inherently going to be soaked in fats and oils, which will negatively affect your digestion and cause breakouts in your skin.

Soda – Sodas and other carbonated beverages release carbon dioxide gas, often causing uncomfortable (and unsightly) bloating. They also contain high levels of fructose, which may increase the effects of aging.

Gum and Hard Candy – In addition to the sugar often found in these treats, they also cause you to swallow more air, which is a major factor in bloating and gas.

Thanks for the tips Doc, I just started eating brown rice and think it has made a big difference. I even order it instead of white rice in sushi where possible. Unfortunately though fried foods still follow me around, LOL. I was just at the beach this Memorial day weekend and had to have two funnel cakes, so I had heartburn for the rest of the night. Hopefully I learned my lesson this time! I bet my wife wont let me forget about it for months.
