Although I am a full-fledged makeup obsessed individual of many, many years, there are occassions when I make the acquaintance of a beauty product that makes me gasp out loud in amazement. So it was with the brand new Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light by Hourglass Cosmetics.

From the sleekly designed packaging to the spectacular performance of the makeup, Ambient Light is pretty much perfection.

Hourglass always does a beautiful job with their packaging, and this powder is no exception. Housed in a weighty metallic compact is a pillow of powder to apply with an accompanying kabuki brush made of taklon. The flat and yet fluffy kabuki brush comes with a pouch, which is a really nice touch.

There are six shades of Ambient Lighting Powder to choose from, each offering a different lighting effect. Ambient Lighting Powder is different from any other traditional face powder with “photoluminescent technology”, micron-sized spherical particles that refract light and create transparent coverage. It’s like having a professional lighting technician on hand to make you glow in a very unique and lovely way. Best of all, these are universal finishing powders that work for any skin tone.

The texture of the powder is extremely lightweight, without any obvious signs of glitter. It is definitely a finishing powder, so if you are prone to oily skin use a regular face powder before hand.

The powder melts into my skin, leaving only the most gorgeous, long-wearing glow. It photographs so well, and as a result has completely captured my heart. Ethereal Light, the shade I chose, mimics a moonlit glow.

The other shades available are:

  • DIFFUSED LIGHT: A soft, warm, pale yellow powder. Light your skin with DIFFUSED LIGHT to reduce redness and give skin clarity – like a soft ray of morning light.

  • ETHEREAL LIGHT: An opalescent sheer, cool white powder. Light your skin with ETHEREAL LIGHT to mimic a moonlit glow – even in broad daylight.

  • RADIANT LIGHT: A sun-kissed golden beige powder. Light your skin with RADIANT LIGHT to extend a summer glow, or enhance the overall complexion with believable, subtle, warmth.

  • MOOD LIGHT: A soft, sheer lavender pink powder. Light your skin with MOOD LIGHT to mimic the softest most forgiving light and reveal your brightest complexion.

  • DIM LIGHT: A neutral peach beige powder. Light your skin with DIM LIGHT to blur imperfections and highlight a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.

  • LUMINOUS LIGHT: A champagne pearl powder. Light your skin with LUMINOUS LIGHT to create a soft, incandescent candlelit glow – day or night.

Ambient Lighting Powder retails for $45 and gives incredibly good glow that is worth every single penny. The kabuki brush is available for $35. This powder is paraben, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten free. You can find these makeup treasures right now at Sephora.com and they will be available in Sephora stores mid-February 2013. Other retail locations include Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, and Space NK.
