While at an event for Fred Segal Studio Beautymix last month, I happened upon a cosmetic company of that caught my eye not only for it’s sleek packaging and impressive products, but also for a the focus behind the company.
Besides being a range of fantastic argan oil products, Kahina – Giving Beauty is focused on charity in a way that’s unheard of in the beauty industry, and that is never a bad thing. A whopping 25% of the company’s profits goes directly to the Berber women who harvest the argan oil inMorocco.
In this day and age, I cannot believe that there are women who are not allowed the opportunity to read and write, but many of the women who produce the argan oil cannot even write their names. I find Kahina – Giving Beauty’s mission to give these woman opportunities to better than lives awe-inspiring.
Katharine Phillips L’Heureux, the founder of Kahina Giving Beauty, recently sat down with us for a Q & A:
Painted Ladies: After all of your experience in the beauty industry, what gave you the push to actually start your line of argan oil products in the first place? :
Katharine: I really have very little experience inside the beauty industry, other than being an avid skin care consumer. I was looking for an effective organic skin care at the time I first traveled to Morocco in 2007. It was then that I discovered argan oil. I wasn’t used to using a pure oil on my face, but fell in love with the argan oil and was captivated with the story behind its production. At the time, argan oil was virtually unheard of in the US.
I started offering it to my friends, and they all had the same positive reaction that I did, so I decided to take it a step further and develop a small line of organic cosmetics based on argan oil. I found a chemist who specializes in organic formulations and we worked together to create the line, originally just the cleanser, the serum and the lotion. My vision was to offer a simple, effective organic skin care line, elegantly packaged for a sophisticated green consumer, and thereby help the Berber women of the argan region.
Painted Ladies: Why argan oil?
Katharine: Extremely rich in Vitamin E, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, argan oil has been shown to reduce inflammation, minimize the appearance of wrinkles and protect the skin from environmental factors. It is non-greasy and absorbs easily into the skin so it is very easy to use. And it works for all skin-types. I had combination skin – very dry on my cheeks and oily at the t-zone. For the first time, after first using argan oil, my skin was completely balanced. While those with oily skin might be concerned about putting a pure oil on their face, the argan oil is actually very effective at treating oily skin. The plant sterols active in argan oil also work to treat acne, and it is a very effective treatment for eczema and rosacea
A great all-purpose ingredient, it makes a great night moisturizer for the face, a hand and body treatment, and an excellent hair conditioner. I rub it on my cuticles, especially during these winter months, and apply it to the tips of my hair to relieve frizz. It is amazing how a single ingredient can do so much.
Painted Ladies: Do you have plans to expand your line in the future?
Katharine: We launched the line with only four products in March – the Cleanser, the Facial Lotion, the Serum and the Pure Oil and now have extended it to include the Travel Basics and Eye Serum. We have plans to launch three or four more products by the end of 2010.
Painted Ladies: Are your products safe for people going through cancer treatment?
Katharine: Our products are free of harmful chemical ingredients, including parabens, synthetic fragrances, sulfates and GMOs. They are all natural and we use organic botanicals whenever possible, so they are very safe for people going through cancer treatment, as well as pregnant women.
Giving back AND creating opportunities for the women who provide their resources? Now that’s just plain beautiful.
Katharine, your mission is entirely inspirational, and I applaud you for doing something to benefit a group of people who truly needs the assistance.
