Let’s talk about Old Wives’ Tales and at-home medical remedies. We’ve all heard them through the years – “starve a fever, feed a cold” and “crack your knuckles and you’ll get arthritis” come to mind. If you’ve ever had a cold sore, I’m sure you’ve heard many at-home remedies that turn out to be more myth than reality.
I have to tell you that I’m the queen of trying Old Wives’ Tales and at-home remedies. Oh, yes; and much to my chagrin, they rarely if ever work.
Thinking back in time, there was the day many years ago and before YouTube when I decided to try my hand at de-potting my eyeshadow singles and ended up nearly causing a fire in the oven. My mom was not thrilled, neither was the rest of my family who had to smell the melted plastic case of the eyeshadows many hours later. Not my best move! I ended up figuring out a much safer way to get my eyeshadow pans out of their case, so all was well that ended well.
Then there was the time I decided to follow a recipe for at-home sugar hair removal at the tender age of 13. Can you guess how this ends? With a scar that’s still on my left forearm! My mom had found an old-school beauty book at a local book sale and the recipe seemed innocent and easy enough, but I overlooked the fact that it really wasn’t a wise idea that I wouldn’t repeat or wish anyone to repeat, ever!
That’s how it goes with cold sores. It’s so tempting to try at-home remedies, like putting ice on the affected area or slathering the cold sore with witch hazel/vinegar/tea bags. Unfortunately, neither of those remedies works at all. When it comes to cold sores, you can’t mess around! Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), which is carried by 67% of the world population under the age of 50 (source). It’s that contagious!
When it comes to cold sores, you can’t mess around and have to fight with medicine and not myth. I know because I’ve been there and have found that Abreva® can heal a cold sore in 2 ½ days when used at the first sign of an outbreak*. While other products on the market provide only temporary relief of cold sore symptoms, only Abreva® is FDA approved to shorten the healing time of your cold sore.
*Median Healing Time 4.1 days. 25% of users healed in 2.5 days.
