Cosmetics Confessions: Your Favorite Eyeshadow Primer

By Sheila Arkee

Okay, ladies & gents, it’s time to dish at our weekly open post. Pour the coffee, grab a Bear Claw, we’ll be here for awhile!

Monika recently made me aware of the fabulousness that is e.l.f.’s $3 Shadow Primer. It’s on my list of things to hunt down! Right now I’m using and loving Prestige’s Primed & Ready shadow primer, which is better than any high end primer I’ve ever used.

The things I look for in a primer are durability (of course) and there needs to be a bit of slip – I am battling aging lids over here! Despite its popularity, Urban Decay’s Primer Potion never quite wo

  • I’ve actually been really frustrated with eye primers lately. My first primer was the Urban Decay Primer Potion when it was still in the crappy genie bottle that you had to cut open to get all the product out of. It absolutely blew me away! It made my eyeshadow last forever, and I loved it. Then when I ran out, I bought it in the new tube, and I have to assume that either 1)they reformulated the product along with the bottle or 2) my eyes built up resistance(?). It just doesn’t work the same anymore. So I bought the Too Faced one, but it seems the same. It mostly holds my shadows, but will crease at the end of the day. So when this runs out, I think I’m going to try the Makeup Forever or the Nars one and see if they work better for me. And I found that even though I don’t have terribly oily skin, I absolutely cannot use a paint pot or color tattoo or any cream stick product as a primer. It WILL crease on me, and that’s super frustrating. And creasing is ugly.
Sorry for the storybook!! That’s my primer experience :) So essentially I don’t have a favorite.

My absolute must-haves are e.l.f. Essential Eyelid Primer ($1) and Concrete Minerals Electric Eye Primer. I am NEVER without them!

I like the eye primer from Coastal Scents called Shadow Worx. .676 fl oz for $10! This tube lasts me more than a year, and I use it every day.

It’s finally available through Amazon, so I don’t have to make a huge Coastal Scents order whenever I want to buy another one.

    Totally UD, all the way.

The UD primer potion really dries out my eyelids and then then flakes off my eyeshadow :( I really want to love it.I have been up using the original $1 ELF primer which lasts a pretty decent amount on me,and doesn’t dry my eyelids out,and I also really like the Prestige P&R but it is a little too drying in the winter, but is awesome in the humid St.Louis summer.
