Cosmetics Confessions: Clinique, My Makeup Gateway Brand Of Choice

By Sheila Arkee

Okay, ladies & gents, it’s time to dish at our weekly open post. Pour the coffee, grab some donut holes, we’ll be here for awhile!

From the chic green laquered packaging to the enticing (and mismatched) floral carboard outer packaging, Clinique was the brand that captured the attention of my young makeup-obsessed self. While I’d had dalliances with Maybelline and Revlon, my desire to get my hands on Clinique makeup consumed so much of my waking hours that it was a moment of supreme justice when I acquired my very own Stay Matte powder compact in high school. Even more impressive than my much lusted after powder I proudly showed off in the quad during lunch is the fact that I had to purchase this entirely on the sly. My parents did not approve of my high school makeup wearing ways at all! And look at me now!

Without a MAC store or counter in close proximity, Clinique was my starter makeup brand. While I don’t wear much Clinique now, I still get excited when I see their green laquered and metalllic packaging. Funny enough, I cleary remember turning my nose up at Wet n Wild, unaware that I’d be completely coo coo for cocoa puffs over their shadows in the present day.

What about you? What was your makeup brand of choice from the early days of your makeup loving life?

I will always have a fond place in my heart for Clinique! It helped to get me through my terrible acne-laden days of yore. I REALLY want to help them re-design their packaging (it screams 80’s to me, and not in a good way) but their products really are great for late teens to early 20’s skin.

Before I even knew what a make-up counter was, my friends and I would peruse the makeup aisle in Rite-Aid (R.I.P) and lust after the many shades of Revlon lipsticks. (I still use Blackberry, a blueish-red.)

And of course, Lip Smackers will always be a favorite, no matter what my age!

Monika – I would love to see what you could do with their packaging. It has been the same old same old for years!

I think Clinique was everyone in my junior high’s gateway makeup brand. Whenever my mom FINALLY got me some, I was beyond excited and felt like I finally fit in…of course pretty much the only thing I got was powder, but if we timed it right and got it during bonus week, well, I was in *heaven* because then I also had Clinique lipstick, probably blush and mascara, and some form of skincare. Ah the days of yore 😉 But yeah, that packaging is ridiculous.
