I do a significant amount of work in public spaces, hauling my laptop out and about to catch up on emails, write blog posts, and such. It’s fantasic people watching, by the way.
Earlier this week I was sitting in one of my favorite haunts and sitting near me was a gal who took out her makeup bag and mirror and starting doing the whole shebang – foundation, shadow, and so on. I’m not a fan of public grooming besides a quick powder or lip touch up to begin with, so when she pulled out a pair of false lashes and threw ‘em on (while checking her iPhone at the same time), I was appalled. And yet, slightly impressed at the same time.
While I firmly believe false lash application needs to be kept in the privacy of one’s boudoir (or car, even), I was amazed she got it all done in a flash. That takes skills.
So, what do you think? Are you a fan of primping in public?

The closest to doing that in public is the washrooms at my job. I use the quietest one that only has 3 stalls. There’s no reason to not find some sort of privacy to do that (specially since it’s fun keeping it a “mystery” from les boys). However, Kudos to her for the false lash application like that. I still have a hard time at my own boudoir.
I put lipstick on at the table, otherwise I use a bathroom. That’s so funny though that she’d do the whole shebang in public. Certainly removes any mystery she might have started with.
I don’t like hanging out in public restrooms longer than necessary so I regularly whip out my makeup bag at my desk at work to apply powder or check on my lipstick. I also apply chapstick constantly out of boredom/habit.
I’m surprised how fascinated some men can be by makeup application. One of my male co-workers once mentioned in conversation “Wendy must have the softest lips ever…she’s constantly putting on that lip stuff.”
I’ll admit it. I am a total public groomer. My makeup is usually done on the train on the way to work…lashes, contouring and all. If I cannot get comfortable on the train then I do it at my desk at work. In my defense, i work at a cosmetic company and this is acceptable behavior…IMO

It’s none of my business, but why not wake up 10 minutes earlier and do it at home? It’s just not classy.
It’s not indecent or nasty, it’s just makeup, and I don’t hide the fact that I wear it (or not, when I don’t). So why not?
However, it is much easier to do at home and I draw the line at doing anything in public that impedes on others. So if I have seat to myself on the bus or subway and I haven’t finished “putting my face on” I’ll go for it. If there is someone near me I think it’s rude to try and do so much in my little lap and potential inconvenience them with my elbows!
I was so guilty of putting my makeup on at my desk at work (caveat: I worked in a tiny office with no one else…) but could do it so quickly. Bad habit, I know, but it was somehow soothing to me (I hated that darn job). Now, I’m a big fan of putting my makeup on in the car while my husband drives (that mirror is the BEST, plus the lighting) but it’s just tinted moisturizer, cream blush and a bit of lipstain. I should say, though, that I am VERY guilty of doing the whole shebang if I’m on a flight and the flight is landing…I fly cross-country and by the time we’re there, I need to refresh. I keep it very contained but I definitely do a full face wipe/moisturizer/cream/lip gloss/blush you name it. It just feels so good and I like arriving perky.
