Cosmetic Confessions: Your Shadow Routine

By Sheila Arkee

Okay, ladies & gents, it’s time to dish. Pour the coffee, pull out the leftover Valentine’s candy, we’ll be here for awhile.

How much eyeshadow do you wear on a daily basis? Do you keep to a similar routine on a daily basis? Do you pull out all the stops on a daily basis, or is it dependent on your mood and the time factor?

On a totally daily basis? None. I put on liner (UD usually a shimmery brown or taupe) and skip the shadow. If I have time I do shadow, and usually if I do, at least two or three shades are involved.

I usually don’t wear any shadow. I might put some Stilla Kitten on my inner corners and brow bone, or maybe a sweep of vanilla shadow all over the lid, but that’s only when I have time. I really should MAKE time for shadow! It’s so fun!

I’ve been on a shadow kick for most of the last year. For years I just used a little shimmery pinky nude or taupe, maybe with a little ivory on the browbone, and then would put something darker in the crease and some liner when I wanted to look more dressed up. But I got bit by the bug last year, and have been doing a full-on eye look nearly every day.

I generally stick to neutral tones (golds, creams, taupes, browns, grays, dirty plums, dirty greens), and make a lot of use of the Naked and Naked 2 palettes from Urban Decay, but I go all the way with a lid color, a crease color, and a blending/browbone color. I tend to go for shimmers over mattes, and I’ve really taken to black felt tip pen liners, or the Milani Liquif’eye pencil. Occasionally I add a little color with a moss or plum gel pencil liner. Sometimes I go for a slightly retro look with a shimmery ivory all over and a strong black liquid liner.

I have tons of bright colors in my stash, lots of loose pigments, a rainbow palette from Sephora, and a few bright liners, but I hardly ever use them. I’d like to use them a bit more, but I have to find a way a lawyer/mom in her 40s can add color without looking ridiculous.

It depends on what I am up to that day. If I’m going into town, I wear fairly muted shadows: light pinks, taupes, beiges, peaches, golds, light dusty purples. (I’m in search of a job, and it’s a small, conservative town)

If I’m at home, I may well pull out all the stops and go nuts with red & black, shocking pink and bright orange, bright purples, greens and blues. I love to play with shadow, and see so much inspiration these days on beauty blogs!

It can definitely depend on the time I have, but lately for the weekdays, I’ve been getting up early enough to put on what I consider “good” makeup. I stick mostly with neutrals (I’m on a Naked palette kick right now) and a standard light shadow on the inner half, dark shadow on the outer half, blend blend blend, highlight, etc. I always put on UD primer potion beforehand. Always. No other primer works for me. Generally I use 4 shadow colors every day. inner, outer, crease, highlight. I would do my makeup 5 times a day if I could. I love it!
