‘Tis the season for sales galore, and I certainly took advantage of many of them to restock some favorite beauty products and try out some that I’ve had my eye on for a while. One of my favorite recent Holiday season purchases was the Coastal Scents Bionic Flat Top Buffer Brush, which has quickly become a brush I constantly reach for during makeup applications.
I’ve been using this brush made from synthetic fibers to apply my primer (I’m hooked on Cover FX Illuminating Primer at the moment), and then use the same brush to apply a liquid foundation.
The results are great, comparable to the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring brush, which is also synthetic. While I’ve been a devotee of the Good Karma brush for the past year, it is constantly shedding and for that reason is very annoying to use and wash. Priced at $24, it’s also much more expensive than the Coastal Scents Bionic Flat Top Buffer brush.
Side-by-side, you can see the Coastal Scents Pro Fluff Brush and Urban Decay Good Karma brush are around the same size, but don’t look very similar. While the Urban Decay brush is rounded and firmly packed, the Coastal Scents version is flat and not quite as firmly packed.
I don’t have many negative things to say about the fab Coastal Scents Bionic Flat Top Buffer, but there are two concerns: 1) The brush came with a minor bit of shedding, but I think it has something to do with how the brush was constructed, because the protruding strays don’t budge, 2) The brush takes a little longer than any of my other brushes to completely dry. I’m not sure why, but it definitely needs extra time.
Looking at reviews on Coastal Scents, it seems that many others share my concerns. Great brush that sheds, but you don’t quite mind because it is such a great deal and a top notch foundation brush.
My Final Thoughts: While the Coastal Scents Bionic Flat Top Buffer isn’t an exact dupe for the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring brush and it does seem to have similar shedding issues, it’s definitely comparable and an excellent foundation brush on it’s own. This brush is worth snagging and at it’s low price of $7, worth stocking up on.
Rating: A- (minus for the shedding)
Availability: Coastalscents.com – shipping is usually around a week in my experience.
