When it comes down to applying foundation, I have to say there is nothing quite as great as using a foundation brush. Sure, I’ll cheat with a Beauty Blender, and I do want to acquire an airbrush machine at some point, but there’s something to be said about the control and reach offered by a flat brush that is specifically made for foundation.
The brush in this example is MAC’s #190, which is made from synthetic hair. Flat, dense, and rounded, it’s a great brush for laying on foundation and then blending.
The trick with this brush is simple – don’t use so much foundation!!! A dab, literally, will do for your entire face. The dab in the photo is more than enough!
Using the brush I place a light slap of foundation in strategic areas – forehead, chin, nose, cheeks - and then use the brush to blend away, using mostly an up-and-down motion, like painting. If needed, I’ll use a separate brush, or sponge, to blend away any harsh lines.
I will admit that these types of brushes are a pain to clean. I usually keep brush cleanser on hand, and make sure to throughly wash and dry the brush once a week (or so … emphasis on the”or so” part when I’m the one using it, and its not being used on makeup clients.)

Could you recommend any (inexpensive) brands to purchase? I love my MAC, but it’s hard keeping up with the prices for the brushes!
Kim, I know! I’m going to start including options on all price ranges in my reviews now, because I do understand!
