Breaking Down Beauty: The Difference Between Blue- and Yellow-Based Red Lip Products

By Sheila Arkee

When it comes to the matter of red lip colors, a red is a red is a red, right? Not so fast.

If you find yourself struggling to pick the  right red lip color for your skin tone, it’s important to know the difference between red lipsticks with a yellow base versus red lip products with a blue base.

I present to you a yellow-based red:

And a blue-based red:

Think about the undertones of your skin. If you favor pink and look best in cool shades, you will most likely look best in blue-based reds. If you favor yellow or olive, you will most likely look  best in yellow-based reds.

When I was a fledgling beauty junkie, I remember watching a report about an actual scientific study behind the attraction of red lips. The study found that men preferred women to wear blue-based lipsticks, but by and large women preferred yellow-based reds.

Do you find yourself gravitating towards yellow or blue? I consider myself to be an equal opportunity lover of all makeup, and this includes red lipsticks.

Here are my all-time (so far) 7 favorite red lip colors.

I definitely like blue reds better because they don’t look sallow on my skin like yellow or orange reds do. I don’t see a difference in the shade of lipstick I’m wearing against my teeth, but I definitely notice the coloration around my nose and cheeks. Also anymore if I’m going red, it’s usually more of a berry red.

I have very warm tan skin. I suppose yellow based reds look better on me, but I do love a blue based red for that classic pin up look!
