Breaking Down Beauty: Loose Powder Application

By Sheila

A while back, a friend asked me a very good question — how exactly is one supposed to get loose powder out of the container?

She wasn’t sure if you were supposed to remove the plastic sifter insert on top or not. You know, that piece of clear plastic separating the plastic from the rest of the world.

Well, here, for once and for all, is a concise tutorial on exactly how to practice proper loose powder preparation!

In these photos, I’m using a kabuki brush, and you better believe there’ll be another “Breaking Down Beauty” all about kabuki brushes! For the record, it’s MAC’s #180 brush, and MAC’s Invisible Set Powder.

Step 1: When you bring home your loose powder, you’ll need to remove a little clear sticker on top of the clear plastic insert, right where the holes are. Don’t forget to do this part – critical!

You don’t need to remove the plastic sifter, just the little sticker.

Step 2: Turn the container upside down …

…and give it a couple of healthy taps.  Trust me on this one.

Step 3: Turn the container right side up again, and open the jar. You should see a nice layer of powder on the lid and also in the “well” of the jar. The well is that area on top of that clear plastic sifter.

Step 4: Apply your makeup by dipping your brush into the well, or the lid.

Step 5: Tap off the excess powder into the well of the jar.

Step 6: Using circular motions with brush, apply powder to your face.

Voila! Done!

  • ooo – this is the perfect entry for my request: PLEASE explain how to do mineral powder foundation/concealer/glow/finishing powder

I know the brushing and buffing bit … but how do I conceal a blemish/redness/darkness? Where do I put glow? This needs to be addressed!

Good question! I will put it on my list and hopefully get it up in the next couple of weeks!
