Breaking Down Beauty: How to Wear Orange Lipstick

By Sheila Arkee

When I saw a recent ad for L’Oreal Color Riche lipstick featuring a bright swash of orange, all I could think was … game ON!

Spring is on the way, and it’s time to trade in our darker Fall/Winter colors for something a little more splashy, right? Orange lipstick may seem a bit frightening, but when applied with flattering makeup, it can be a fun way to change up your routine.

In the next couple of pics, I’m wearing MAC’s Morange lipstick, an amplified cream which is SUPER bright, and also super creamy on the lips. In all of the lip photos, I’ve lined with The Body Shop’s Beech lip liner.

MAC Morange Lipstick

With bold lip colors, such as orange and red, you don’t want to do what I did my entire freshman year of college and wear them with equally bold shadow colors like purple or blue. Yes, I was a teenaged beauty victim (and then some!).

For bright lips, follow the K.I.S.S. rule – keep it simple, sweetie! These color suggestions apply to all skin tones equally — a light peach blush on the cheeks and a light gold wash on the eyelids are the perfect complements to a bright orange lip color.

Here’s what I used in the photos:

Lips: MAC Morange

Cheeks: Illamasqua Hussy

Eyes:

Base: MAC Bare Study Paint Pot

Lid: Bare Escentuals True Gold

Crease: MAC Cork

Liner: MAC Teddy Kohl

Brows: MAC Charcoal Brown

Mascara: Plush Lash

If the idea of bright orange is still a little scary, take the idea for the trend and tone it down a little … or a lot.

Apply bright orange, blot the heck out of it with a napkin so you have a stain on your lips, and add a bit of clear gloss.

You can also do the same and add a light brown gloss.

Also,  try lipsticks and lip glosses that are orange-toned but not nearly as intense.

MAC’s CB96 is a pretty option.

I love MAC’s Sandy B lipstick, which is a shimmery and gold peach.

Another great option that I love is Stila’s Papaya Lip Glaze, which is sheer and flattering for every skin tone.

One other tip for bright lip colors – make sure they stay on your lips and not your teeth by using a lip primer before hand. Check out this previous Breaking Down Beauty on lip color application.

Will you be getting your orange lip colors on in the upcoming months?

I’ve never tried Orange lipstick either, I’ve always been worried about my teeth looking yellow.

When I was in my teens, I used to laugh at my mom for wearing orange lipstick. Back then, orange lipstick was her favourite. Now that I am older, I am starting to see why she loves the colour so much and still does. The face looks so much brighter!

I love the look of the orange with gray in that L’Oreal ad. You look great with Morange! I really like how you showed the different variations of orange lips. I remember wearing an orange-y lip gloss from Revlon a few years ago. I’m inspired to wear orange now :)

Thanks, Y! I didn’t realize it until you brought it up, but yes, the orange and grey are fab together!

  • great post. That sandy B looks a beautiful colour xx

  • I have my perfect orange lippy in Morgana Cryptoria’s Shrieking Orange. I just love it.

Oh, what perfect lips :o !

What a treat! I just discovered your blog and here you show a favorite look. I love a bold lip (no matter how far I get from ingenue) and your total look is perfect. Last summer, Revlon featured two ‘orange’ glosses and I was surprised how wearable they were given my light, pink complexion. I was doing a nude/sheer eye but I love the golds you featured.

Will definitely try the Stila gloss!

    Orange is so surprisingly wearable!!!

Has anyone tried the L’Oreal orange? I think its call Volcanic.

  • admin

I haven’t, but I might pick it up soon.

  • K squared

@KLP THANK YOU! I’ve been trying to figure out that color since the ad came out!

  • The orange look is so cute…but I don’t think it would suit everybody. At least blotting off some of the lipstick and putting on a brown gloss made it a little neutral and wearable.

what is the number of lispstick?
