Breaking Down Beauty – Applying Concealer

By Sheila

A few weeks ago I put out a call for your suggestions for Breaking Down Beauty topics. Miss Boom wanted to know how I apply concealer … and here ya go, girl!

When I’m applying concealer on other people I always use a brush, but in my own life, I use my ring finger because that’s what every beauty advice book I have ever read has suggested.

The reason? The muscles in the ring finger are not as strong as your other fingers, so you don’t drag the delicate under eye skin and cause teensy wrinkles. I’m not altogether convinced that handling that area with strong fingers is what causes wrinkling, but I’ll go with it anyway.

Step 1: What I always do with my concealer is to take a bit out (with my ring finger) and use the back of my hand as a palette and pat, pat, pat the concealer into my hand to warm it up so it will melt when I apply it under my eye.

Step 2: Pat, pat, pat the concealer under my eye. I try to keep it localized to that little “well” area closest to the tear duct.

Step 3: Keep on blending and then set with your powder. These days I’m not using powder all over my face anymore, just because my skin is a little on the dry side right now, but I always set creamy products with a powder.

And you’re set!

If you have any suggestions for future Breaking Down Beauty posts, just let me know!

I’ve read that the old wives tale about specific fingers giving you wrinkles is a myth. Unless you’re constantly pulling at the skin for hours a day your skin has enough elasticity to be able to bounce back from a couple of seconds of tugging.
