Breaking Down Beauty: 3 Steps To Smooth, Callus-Free Feet

By Sheila Arkee

Growing up as a pre-teen with size 10W feet was rough. My feet approximated boats from a very young age – around 11 – and it took a while for me to come to acceptance with them. Seriously, it’s only been in the last few years that I’ve felt comfortable wearing sandals! While my feet will never be elegant, they get me where I need to go, and for that I am entirely thankful.

Calluses are the bane of my existance, and yet they are a fact of my life. While I’ve discussed my approach to callus removal in the past, I’ve never revealed my secret trick to getting rid of heavy callus accumulation. You know how it goes – you neglect your feet for a while and enter scaly-ville faster than you’d like to admit!

The secret is to use the same stuff nail salons use. You know when they try to upsell you in to a $5 “Callus Remove”? You can do the exact same thing on your own, for far less than the cost of an individual salon treatment.

Right now I’m using a brand that is hard to track down, but a similar one that works the same way is Be Natural Callus Eliminator, which is easily available at online and at Sally’s Beauty Supply.

Be Natural Callus Eliminator is a gel that breaks down your dead, dry skin and makes your heels super smooth without pain. It’s not a long process, but make sure to set aside about 10 minutes to accomplish this task.

I usually use this product right after a shower, and then rinse my feet off afterwards. Apply the gel to your calluses and wait 5 minutes for it to be effective. To keep the gel on my feet and not my surrounding areas, I place my feet in plastic shopping bags from the grocery store, or, you could even use a couple of pieces of saran wrap.

When the incubation time is over, you’ll need to use a foot rasp and a little bit of elbow grease to remove the gel and dry skin. The type of foot rasp I use is basically like a strong piece of sandpaper. I’ve been using one similar to the Flowery Swedish Clover Fot File for years, and they are wonderful and last for an incredibly long time.

Rinse off your feet and voila! Smooth, callus-free feet.

To keep them in shape, use a heavy moisturizer right after and always at night. I like Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream a lot, and also Aquaphor. Seal the moisturizer in with thick socks, and you’ll be good to go. I’m addicted to slipper socks with treads on the bottom – I can’t sleep at night without them!
