Best Of Beauty 2011: My Four Favorite Mascaras

By Sheila Arkee

And so begins the Best Of Beauty Series for 2011!

I hope you all had a swell Holiday season, even though it’s not officially over ’til New Years. Mine was great and I sure enjoyed seeing my little guy opening presents and genuinely enjoying the day. :) It’s those little moments with him that I truly appreciate.

To start of my Best Of series, I wanted to start of with mascaras, the one product that I sincerely could not live without. Doesn’t it feel weird on those days when you somehow forget to put on mascara? It’s happened to me more than once, embarassingly enough!

This year I’ve tried several, but there are four that have struck a chord with my beauty obsessed heart and will definitely remain in my permanent rotation. In random order, here are my four favorite mascaras from 2011.

MAC Opulash

Having heard mixed reviews about Opulash, I wasn’t all too keen on trying this new offering from MAC, whose mascaras haven’t really been all that holy grail for me in the past. Opulash worked wonders on me and I wish I had a tube in my rotation right this very minute. Must fix this problem!

Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara

Never having used Mary Kay’s mascara, I wasn’t sure quite what to expect, but I was really impressed by the volume and general lushness this mascara provides. It’s also a reader favorite, so it gets extra points for being so great.

Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash

This is another mascara I wasn’t sure what to expect and I ended up falling madly in love. Madly. This mascara truly floats my boat and at $20 it is well worth the splurge!

L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes

Given my past not-so-great experience with L’Oreal Voluminous, I was filled with trepidation when I initially tried this mascara. Color me pleasantly shocked. I am delighted with the full, long lashes this mascara provides. My only beef is that it takes major elbow grease to remove the product. Am I alone here?

In 2012 I have plans to try new-to-me mascaras from Clinique, Almay, and Revlon, to name a few. Although I definitely have a comfort zone when it comes to mascaras and don’t really stray, I’m exicted to be more adventurous.

What are some of your favorite mascaras?

My favorites for 2011 are the Diorshow Mascara and the Make Up Forever Smoky Lash! (:

  • Jean

I have DEFINITELY come around on the MUFE Smoky Lash – I meant to say that several posts ago. I’m still ‘meh’ on the L’Oreal (…and really, the MAC too). It just doesn’t seem as great as the others, especially shown in a direct comparison like this. And I WOWED by the brushes! The trend seems (seemed?) to be bigger, crazier – and these are the basic spoolies for the most part, nothing fancy. Yet they give the best lashes! Color me impressed!

    Maybelline Stiletto. Love that stuff.

I love these kinds of posts. The only one I’ve tried is the MUFE and it is all that!

Napoleon makes some great mascaras that make my year end list. My all time favorite though is Armani Eyes to Kill.

MUFE’s Smokey lash for the win!!!
    Could not agree more :)
