The Five “Please, Don’ts” to Makeup

By Kate

I have read many tips and tricks by some of the top makeup artists in the industry.  Though, I rarely find a list of bad habits that makeup artists despise.  I’d love to take this opportunity and get a few things off my chest that we have all been guilty of one time or another.  I mean this with love when I ask…..

Please, don’t:

  1. Buy before you try- While shopping, have you ever tried on that “Medium” shirt that fits like a Girls’ 14?  The same unfavorable incident can happen with your makeup.  I’ll admit to being guilty of breaking this rule all the time.  Sometimes you see something online that looks awesome and you believe it’ll be perfect for you.  Throw in a free shipping code, and I’m hitting “Place Order” before I know it! However, it’s really important to see a product in person.  How will you know the true texture without feeling it first?  Trying everything in advance should prevent buyer’s remorse and save you extra trips to the store for returns.
  2. Pile it on- I’ve definitely had days where my skin won’t cooperate, everything looks terrible, and it’s time to wash my face and start over.  If your skin isn’t in tip-top shape, don’t assume applying layers and layers of makeup will make it look any better!  Dry and flaky?  Exfoliate and moisturize your skin.  Greasy and large pores?  Toner and primer should do the trick.  No matter what kind of makeup you use or how you apply it (fingers, sponge, brush) use a very small amount at a time.  The same rule goes for color.  You can always add more, it just takes time and patience to work product into the skin.  If you don’t have time to gently layer on dark shadow, it might have to be a mascara only day.
  3. Stick to one brand- It is really easy to get caught up in one brand.  Hey, you love your new lipstick and lip-gloss, might as well try their eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara too!  They have skincare?  Great!  While it’s cool when you find something that works, I’m all about trying new things and keeping an open mind to every cosmetic company.  Just because you loved one product, you probably won’t love it all.  (While I’m a huge fan of NARS blushes, their eye shadows have rarely worked for me).  Explore what every brand has to offer and you’re sure to get the best of the beauty world.
  4. Listen to everyone but yourself- There are tons of rules set by “experts” in beauty and fashion.  Now, I am aware I am writing my own little list of rules right now, but I actually hate rules!  (I am also a hypocrite)  I specifically hate rules when it comes to colors.  Sure, certain skin tones look better in warm shades while others look great in cool shades.  But, no one should ever feel constricted by mere facts!  I have many people asking me “What color blush should I wear?”  And I usually respond with, “What kind of colors do you like?”  It is important to take an “expert” opinion as simply that: an opinion.  One makeup artist might tell you red lipstick is amazing on you, while another artist may suggest berry gloss.  The only opinion you should listen to is your own!  If you look in the mirror and happen to hate how berry gloss looks on you, then don’t wear it.  Makeup is about a feeling, if it makes you feel confident and pretty, it is perfect for you.
  5. Create Unrealistic Expectations- Yes, makeup is amazing.  I couldn’t live without it!  Partly because it’s fun, and also because it makes me look increasingly better.  Better.  Not completely different.  Makeup enhances your natural features while concealing a flaw or two.  However, makeup cannot literally change texture, bone structure, eye color, or anything else a part of you!  Appreciate makeup for what it is.  There are some products out there that deliver impressive results, but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Ok rant over.

If there are any “Please, Don’ts” I forgot to add that have been bothering you, comment below and we can commiserate together!

I totally agree with #4! While makeup is a great way to enhance your natural beauty, I feel like sometimes it’s just fun to go crazy with the totally unnatural colors! In moderation, of course ;)

Like they told me in art school, we learn the rules so that we can learn how to break them.

I am a rule-hater as well. Beauty magazines dispense a lot of rules. To me, the only thing that matters is that I like the way I look and it makes me feel good. Following some rules or formula is of no importance.
