Contestant number four is from the men’s skincare line, Jack Black. I’d never thought to try their lip balm, but I heard a couple of people raving about it, so I gave it a go when spalook.com had 20% off and I needed a little extra something to get the free shipping too. Here’s the breakdown:
- Price: $7
- Moisture level: On the heavier side
- Scent: the most delectable lemon custard scent
- Flavor: nothing really discernible
- SPF factor: SPF 25
- Color: colorless
- Texture: this is also a heavier lip balm not unlike Aquaphor in texture. It’s thick and on the greasy side.
- Organic? It’s not billed as organic, but other than the sunscreen, the ingredients list is good, including shea butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, lemon peel oil and others. Interestingly, fragrance is not listed, but I’m pretty sure this is an artificial fragrance of some kind. It smells more complicated than just standard lemon peel extract.
- Irritating ingredients (camphor, menthol, phenol)? No
- Packaging/application: Pretty royal blue tube with slant applicator
- Good for daytime or before bed? For me, bedtime
- Availability: drugstore.com
It was this review that triggered a light bulb to go off in my head. Sunscreen on my lips doesn’t work. This balm is lovely in texture and scent, but once again, just like with Blistex’s Lip Massage, my lips feel itchy from it. Therefore, I was unable to give it a full night to work and see how my lips were when I woke up in the morning.
Judging from the consistency, if this didn’t contain SPF and I was able to wear it, it would have done a fine job. It’s very rich and moisturizing, with a slightly greasy feel. It would definitely be better for bedtime if you wear lipstick/gloss during the day.
You have to squeeze hard to get the product to dispense out of the tube, but a tiny bit goes a long way. I like that this doesn’t have petrolatum in it.
All in all, I’d say if you have no problems with SPF in your lip products, you just might like Jack Black’s product.
