Our next contender in the PL Lip Balm Week is Blistex’s new Lip Massage product.   Here’s the breakdown:

  • Price: cheap at $2.69
  • Moisture level: Medium
  • Scent: Fruity
  • Flavor: A little fake fruity, but nothing too offensive
  • SPF factor: Yes, SPF 15
  • Color: colorless
  • Texture: Feels thick and a little greasy at first, but sinks in quickly and leaves just a hint of tackiness
  • Organic? No, but no parabens
  • Irritating ingredients (camphor, menthol, phenol)? Menthol, but towards the middle to end of the list
  • Packaging/application: Standard twist-up tube, but product is dispensed through hole in slanted tip massage applicator.
  • Good for daytime or before bed? Both
  • Availability: Rite Aid stores, drugstore.com

Boy did I have high hopes for this one – the applicator sold me immediately.  It’s soft, yet has these ridges in it that somehow feel exfoliating, although I’m not sure they do much.  It’s the unique factor at work here!

My problems set in about 10 minutes after application.  My lips and skin are not all that sensitive (I can even use Lip Venom without problems) but this product made my lips itch.  I’m not sure what it is, but since I don’t use lip balms with sunscreen, it could be the SPF or maybe it’s just the formula itself.  It has a cooling sensation, but nothing too powerful like some of Blistex’s other medicated lip treatments.

Rite Aid has a good return policy.  I’d say if you’re looking for a midweight lip balm with SPF, give this a try and see how it pans out.  This could very well be a problem unique to just me because I’ve seen it get rave reviews elsewhere.

The texture is almost like silicone – it feels heavier than it is, and once it blends/sinks in, it has a velvety feeling.  I can’t comment on how well this works, unfortunately, since I had to wipe it off after 10 minutes.

Wonderful idea, Blistex.  I only wish it had worked out!
