6 Steps To Flawless Red Lips

Press Sample I Bought It

By Sheila Arkee

While it’s always a good time to wear red lip colors, there’s something about the Holiday season that makes sultry red lipstick or lip gloss just that much more right. To make sure your red lips are done right, here are six easy steps to perfect this look and ensure your lips look flawless.

Step 1: Moisturize

Smooth lips are the most crucial ingredient for a successful final product, so start with slathering your lips with your moisturizer of choice. I prefer Aquaphor, which has never let me down even when my lips are at their driest. Leave the balm on your lips for at least 10 minutes. In general, its a great idea to drink plenty of water which hydrates your skin and prevents flakiness to begin with.

Step 2: Slough

You can use a lip scrub if you prefer, but I like to use a warm, dampened wash cloth to remove my lip moisturizer and create an even base for the lip products to follow.

Step 3: Powder

A light, light dusting of translucent powder is my trick to making lip color last. Simply brush a small amount on your lips to dry them out and prime your lips for the intense color to follow.

Step 4: Liner

Use a liner that matches your lip color as a barrier to make sure the lipstick or lipgloss stays within boundaries.

Step 5: Brush

Using a lip brush to apply darker lip colors helps cut down on a lot of unnecessary revisions. This way you’re able to control the amount your apply and where it goes – preferably on your lips and not the surrounding areas!

Step 6: Perfect

Use an angled eyebrow brush with a tad bit of powder to clean up the edges of your lips – add a teensy dash of shimmery highlighitng powder to the top of your cupids’s bow for a little something extra. If needed, go over some edges with a lip liner again to keep things looking sharp and precise.

Aquaphor is my go-to as well. I have to apply it every night before bed or I won’t be able to sleep! Also, great tips. I always hear about applying powder AFTER the lip color!

Great tips. I’d keep my lip pencil sharper, too. Rolling the pencil helps create a sharper line. I learned that from when I assisted MUA Vincent Oquendo
